WAYS for FAMILIES to FIGHT HUNGER in ARLINGTON

There are many things families can do to help the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) fight hunger in Arlington.

All volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a copy of the Minor Hold Harmless form signed by a parent or guardian to volunteer at AFAC.

Please contact Puwen Lee, Laura Jackson or Mona Bormet in the Volunteer Department at AFAC (volunteer4afac@afac.org or 703-845-8486) for more information about any of these opportunities.

Bagging Nights

Children ages 10 and up are welcome to volunteer with their parents at Wednesday Bagging Nights. Children should be closely supervised as the warehouse can be full of people moving heavy crates. Click here for the full schedule.

Family Bagging Nights are the second Monday of each month at 6:30pm. Families need to register to participate by emailing volunteer4afac@afac.org. Family Bagging Nights are perfect for children ages 5-10.

Gleaning

Enjoy some family time picking squash or digging for potatoes for AFAC. Contact Susan Calligari, AFAC's Gleaning Coordinator at masoncal@mac.com for information on how to sign up.

Bake Sales, Lemonade Stands & Yard Sales

Turn your children's entrepreneurial efforts into a fundraising project for AFAC. Match the money they make for a greater impact.

Neighborhood Food Drives

Over 60% of the food AFAC distributes is donated.  Your family can organize neighborhood food drive.  More information, including customizable flyers, can be found on our website’s food drive page - http://www.afacinfo.org/Fooddrivemainpage.htm.  Please contact Magda Jaskot, AFAC’s food drive coordinator, for more information on food drives – magda.jaskot@afac.org.

Leafleting

AFAC has had great success publicizing food drives and other events by having volunteers leaflet neighborhoods.  There will be leafleting opportunities in September for Hunger Action Month and in May for the Letter Carriers Food Drive.  Please email Laura Jackson at laura.jackson@afac.org if you’d like to leaflet for AFAC.

Sorting and Lifting at Special Events

The Boy Scouts Food Drive in November, Canstruction in April and the Letter Carriers Food Drive in May are a few of the annual food drives held for AFAC.  We need strong volunteers to help us sort, lift and carry the many, many cans of food that come in during these special events. Email Laura Jackson at laura.jackson@afac.org to help.
